dammit
My brother just sent me his footage of him playing with his new drone at our place at bear lake. Fyi, i am a film producer who got into the business to outshine my brothers home movies. I don’t want to PAY for a drone, but now i want one for sure.
P.s. I dont care that its not a drone.

As long as you keep your lenses cleaner than your brother, you’ll be okay.

Don’t bother, the idiots are already ruining it for everyone. By the time you get one, there will be so many laws restricting them.

Because I make stuff as well, and am always interested, what sorts of things do you produce? Links and shameless plugs are welcome!

Also, how far off from the ubiquitousness of drone footage are we that it’s no longer impressive? You could always rent one for the few times you’d want footage, or pay a good operator to get those shots for you. Most of the cameras attached to the consumer ones are hot garbage anyway (at least the ones I’ve seen)...

Ahhhh. Got it. Well, always feel free to share if you do personal projects and the like! Feedback is good.

Every time I see stuff like this I want one too. But I have to choose - money for drone, or money for car parts and food for the kids... :)
Look around, maybe you’ll find someone who rents them out?

I spent some time working as a producer for a pharma ad agency, and I feel some of your pain when it comes to wanting to branch out creatively. Do you or your creatives ever put palm trees, or ski slopes, or puppies in your storyboards?

I’m guessing 3-5 years before everything worth shooting with one has been done by someone with one carrying a decent camera. Alternatively, it is when one expects the footage for common stuff, like TV and home movies. The problem right now is that it almost all looks like generic GoPro footage, which was once pretty amazing, but now looks dated.
Back in 2008 I shot some video and stills with a fairly mediocre camera attached to a board running Linux that I hung on my 8’ Cody (kite). The part that amazed people was that I was using my phone over wifi to frame them. Today, those pictures are crap and kind of silly, but I wasn’t comfortable sending anything big enough to injure someone up in the air like that. Today, you could do that with little more than a GoPro with wifi.

The good news is that we are in Utah and have a strong emphasis on healthy living: hiking, biking, etc. I don’t do it a ton but every now and then

Just saying, stick a palm tree in the storyboard, shoot on location. Spec a sweeping overhead, hire a rc pilot/cameraman. And who doesn’t want a puppy on set?
